September 15, 2023 High School Climate Strikes!!!

On September 15, 2023 there’s a Global Youth Climate Strike. We’re organizing strikes at High Schools across San Diego, California, U.S.A. and the world.

This is going to be Global Day of Action.

There will be High School Climate Strikes across America and around the world.

This is your chance to be heard and be part of something that is VERY important!!!

Why are we striking?

Because we have to. It’s just that simple. Or, more accurately, it’s just that crazy and dire.

We all need to act like our world is on fire. Because, it is. The effects of Global Warming are getting worse and worse each and every week. If we want to have a future, we must put a end to this madness. Today. Or there will not be a tomorrow.

We’re helping to organize our High School Climate Strikes here in San Diego.

But you can use our resources, for your High School. No matter if you live in California, Montana, South Carolina, Japan, Germany, or South Africa.

Remember, our movement is about making connections between people. It starts with one person, then two, then before you know it… we’ll be millions strong.

So, don’t be afraid to take the first step.

High School Climate Strike Toolkit

We suggest you start with our Climate Strike Toolkit.

Please note, that if you’re in San Diego, please register your strike with us. But, if your not in San Diego, then you can register your strike with:

Fridays For Future

They have a Map of Actions.

But, if you can “register” or not, please try and do something.

Ask permission or ask forgiveness?

We recommend that you reach out to our school administration before you strike. Here in San Diego, the San Diego Unified School District in 2019, 2012, 2022 has approved resolutions supporting students’ participation in Global Climate Strike events, and people are working on asking those districts to do the same thing this year.

But, we have school districts not in the City of San Diego, that are planning Global Climate Strikes.

What can go wrong?

And other famous last words..
It’s hard to think that too much bad is going to happen if you strike without permission. But, of course, I can’t promise anything. I live in very liberal California.

So what do I know? Right?

If you live in Alabama or Florida, Texas and the like, well… it might not go well. Just saying.

So, you need to decide how you and your school will go….

It’s why we live in America…

Active civic engagement is part of the democratic process, like voting. Protest is an American tradition.

But…

However, California law (and probably everywhere else also) gives school principals the right to classify K-12 students as truant for missing more than 30 minutes of school without an excuse that the principal considers valid.

One truancy should not carry notable consequences, but multiple truancies can result in suspensions or other discipline.

Like I said. Don’t take our advice. But, it’s the right thing to do.

It’s fun

Not to in any way suggest that you’re not doing all of this for the right reason. But, as one of our friends said, “This sounds fun.”

We think it is. But, it’s up to you and your attitude.

Your milage may vary.

What would Bob Marley do?

So as Bob says,

Get up. Stand up.
Stand up for your rights!

Our Goals

The goal of the movement is to put moral pressure on policymakers, to make them listen to the scientists, and then to take forceful action to limit global warming.

Our movement is independent of commercial interests and political parties and knows no borders.

We strike because we care for our planet and for each other. We have hope that humanity can change, avert the worst climate disasters and build a better future.

Every day there are more of us and together we are strong. Everyone is welcome. Everyone is needed. No one is too small to make a difference.

Thanks Fridays For Future,  for the moral and spiritual guidance.

We gotta start NOW!

Climate scientists have warned again and again that governments have only 10 years to take bold action to avert catastrophe. We must stop burning fossil fuels – oil, coal, natural gas – and replace them with renewable energy sources like wind and solar. That transition must start now!

Not to suggest that all solar and wind is good for the environment…….

Climate Strike Look and Feel

What your event looks, sounds and feels like is important to its success. You want your message to be crystal clear to passersby and people watching on TV, and in photos you post. You want your participants to feel inspired. So use visuals, music, and chants that are on-message and exciting.

All you really need is a piece of cardboard and some markers or paint. (Consider the environmental impact of  your signs. If possible, cut cardboard from shipping boxes or cover old signs with printer paper, rather than buying poster boards.)

Your posters don’t have to look professional. Just be sure the letters are clear and thick enough to read from a distance. Write what you want to express, the fewer words the better.

Examples of signs:

Bring your own creativity!

  • Don’t burn my future!
  • Raise your voice, not the sea level
  • Protect your mother (with drawing of earth)
  • I stand for what I stand on
  • Our planet, our future
  • Climate action can’t wait!
  • Clean energy NOW
  • We want POLICIES not PROMISES
  • Raise the alarm!

Bottom line

Have fun!!

Feel good about yourself!!

You’ve got this!!!!
