The Original Surfers is going to run a series of articles, loosely entitled and/or about “A Teen’s Surf Saga.” I’m Kaila, and I’m the “teen.” So, before I begin my “Surf Saga” I thought I’d get a few things out of the way.
The Original Surfers isn’t really about surfing.
Not to burst anyone’s bubble. While the series “A Teen’s Surf Saga” will be about surfing. Confused yet? Hang on, I’ll explain.
I don’t want to give you a “spoiler” but one of the “A Teen’s Surf Saga” installments (read:parts) will be the story behind how I came up with calling our movement, “The Original Surfers”.
But, in true teaser-fashion, you’ll have to tune in for that segment.
What’s “The Original Surfers” about?
So if “The Original Surfers” isn’t about surfing, then what’s it about?
The Original Surfers is about protecting dolphins, marine animals, the beach and the ocean. It’s an environmental movement – but it’s about more than that.
My sister and I grew up in the water in and on the beach in San Diego. We fell in love with the ocean because we had so much fun on the beach.
We figure if other teens have fun at the beach like we do, they’ll want to protect it also.
Fun at the Beach
First and foremost, The Original Surfers is about having fun at the beach.
The Original Surfers will talk about everything from Daily Teen Life, to fashion, to hanging out, to surfing, to skateboarding, to whatever. In other words, Teen Life in a Beach Town.
The ups, downs, drama, humor, life…
And, we’ll weave in this whole having fun at the beach. So teens will want to protect dolphins, marine animals, the beach, and the ocean.
A Teen’s Surf Saga?
What’s a saga anyways?
Webster’s defines “saga” as:
Any long story of adventure or heroic deeds.
Okay. I’ll tell you right from the start, this saga will be extremely light on “heroic deeds.” Just saying. Truth inadvertising. Okay?
But, did you notice the “saga” definition is written in the “disjunctive.” “Or” is disjunctive. The “or” means either one or the other. You don’t have to have both “adventure” and “heroic deeds.” You don’t have to have both.
In order to have a “saga,” you need either “adventure” or “heroic deeds.”
Nope, there’s not a whole lot of “heroic deeds” here. Sorry. Nothing to see. Keep moving along.
But, what we do have in our “A Teens Surf Saga” is some adventure.
What’s “adventure” anyway? One definition…
One definition of “adventure” is: an unusual, stirring experience.
Thanks again, Mr. Webster. Or is it, Ms. Webster?
I have a little different definition, or at least, concept, of adventure.
In my case, at least, it’s not an “adventure” until things start going wrong. When things fall apart. And, you’ll see, I have lots of things going wrong.
You’ll have plenty of opportunity to laugh at me. Like I say, it’s my special talent.
You’ll have a lot of chances to be Monday morning quarterbacks
A person, who after the event, offers advice or criticism concerning decisions made by others; one who second-guesses.
-Websters
I’m sure a lot of you are Monday morning quarterbacks. You’ll second-guess my misadventures in “A Teen’s Surf Saga.” You’ll say, “I would never do that!” “Nope, not me.”
Hey, we all do it. I don’t blame you.
Saga vs Sage?
Do you ever notice the HUGE difference one little old letter in a word can make?
Such as the difference between “saga” and “sage?”
“Sage” is showing wisdom and good judgement.
Not to give it all away here at the beginning… but… “A Teen’s Surf Saga” is not gonna have a whole lot of “sageness.” Is that even a word?
But, you get the drift.
So even though my saga is a tad light on sageness, and most of the “adventure” is stuff going horribly wrong… well, you’ll see.
See you in part 2 of , “A Teens Surf Saga.”
