Have you ever heard about the controversy surrounding Instagram (and along with other social media)? That social media often promotes people to have body issues and feel worse about themselves? I guess it’s because so many people on Instagram look a certain way, trying to be up to society’s standards.
According to reports, Instagram filters and touch-ups make people “look better than they naturally are.” The problem is, is that everyone seeing these “beautiful people” in posts, makes them feel inadequate because they don’t look like that. If we’ve got it right, these Instagram filters and touch-ups make these “beautiful people” give off an unrealistic and/or unattainable image. They don’t look like this in real life.
These unrealistic images contribute and/or cause teens to feel inadequate, feel depression, and lead to eating disorders. All because of the “touch-up” or edited (sometimes heavily edited) pictures. Not good, right? Because of this, we’re going to try something different. Drum roll please…
We’re going to try to have the teens on our Instagram feeds be “natural”. No use of Instagram or third-party apps to filter/touch-up photos and video. It’s our hope that if the teens on our feed look more “natural” (no filtered glam, touch-ups, loads of make-up, etc.) that teens who see our posts on The Original Surfers Instagram, will feel adequate. Because that’s just it, you are enough and always will be.
Just embracing your naturally beautiful self. We’re hoping that our future feed will not contribute or promote teens to feel inadequate, depressed, have self-esteem issues, body image issues, or eating disorders.
We’re not sure how this is all going to turn out but know this – we care and we’re trying.
Stay Tuned!
Love, from us at The Original Surfers
